Wood was probably the first fuel used by man. It was just there, around us, and it could be gathered and stored. Wood allowed independence from the environment, and the rapid expansion of humans across the globe, even to the most adverse latitudes. The control of the production of energy allowed the origin of civilization. After that moment, and for many centuries, wood was the main fuel. It was used by the ancient civilizations across the Mediterranean, first for cooking and to provide warmth, and later for more sophisticated uses; for instance to melt bronze first, and then iron, starting new technological revolutions.
